"The field of Sociology is a subset of Communications Studies..."
I don't know of academia in the USA. But here, sociology can be a degree in itself or specialising in say criminology, social ecology, business, computing etc etc or a subset (major?) or just a few elective units within other degrees.
There are double-degree programs where say 'Communications' can ideally pigeon-pair with another. Takes less time than doing 2 degrees but longer than one. ( and social science/social work)
The highly skilled sociologist understands the mysteries of life, eh? Are their expectations as high as yours?
This sounds relevant?
"...In depth knowledge about society and its institutions (sociology, political science, economics, history, philosophy and law)" is a part of the criteria for...social workers...who CAN specialise in ideals loftier than hands-on welfare assistance.
I recall a lifetime ago, asking questions related to sociology101. No answers proferred, simply "You're on the right track." I got onto psychology as a preferred stream. You wouldn't believe the subjects covered in abnormal psych.
I remember a lifetime ago, social workers, doctors, lawyers etc giving me their opinion...me giving them my decision never made lightly. Not bragging...tis 'context'.
After your post, I searched for "eminent sociologist" and by coincidence, found our former Human Rights Commissioner who holds degrees in law and sociology. I've met him, chatted to him over my beloved cappuccino. ![]()

Search online for any you may recognise there. I think some hold their light under a bushel.

Sorry, Laurie. I refreshed my memory re 3rd culture kids. I don't recall the term being used here but Australia is 'culturally diverse' and we've changed that term for political correctness a "few times" over the last several decades. Not necessarily in sync with attitudinal change.
Somehow we have an expectation we all should have some equal sense of belonging or commitment to Australian culture. I mentioned the mixed loyalties associated with dual citizenships/passports ages ago.
But they add to our culture in waves. Our "acceptance" of them happens then they join us in questioning the next batch of foreigners from another country.
Enclaves of resistance from the old days per Pink's reflections.

"Good questions; but, they all depend on one's perspective. Answers come from different places."
Is this a response to post 30??? Anyway, I have a strong sense of not connecting the dots you make. There's something about the weight or relevance or significance to the repeated
"Communication Studies"
I've missed.
IF we're making the best use of the best sociologists, that's surely a good thing. They are theorists. I think the best are those that have been lucky enough to get themselves into a position to get us thinking and acting for the best. I'm not greatly aware of the empirical evidence for that, let alone if our best is good enough for what allegedly ails us.
Pass the cyber cookies around, please.
