» Feature Writer Laurie Pawlik-Kienlen - what do you do with it?

How do you deal with regret for the past and still enjoy your present? I'm doing research for an article (spurred by personal curiosity).

What are some practical ways to deal with regret?

When we experience regret, we have the opportunity to be introspective in our thinking. People who "have no regrets" seem, generally, to be unable to deal with their inner person.

Am I wrong on this?
.
I often am.

The person who claims to have no regrets may simply place past follies of thought or deed, in a healthy context to what is needed now. Or has no insight? Or is sociopathic. So, when a person says to me they have no regrets, it gives my potentially judgemental mind, room to move. happy

Frank did it his way as a means to minimising 'regret' in his life and Edith's entreaties sure resonated with me. Given the six definitions in my dictionary, maybe 'regret' is all about degrees.

Did anyone realise I was referring above to the songs sung respectively, by Frank Sinatra and Edith PiaF? happy

In today's paper (Tuesday), it's reported that the British PM expresses his regrets on behalf of that nation, on the 200 year anniversary of the end of slavery. Our PM can't apologise on our behalf for the treatment of Aboriginal peoples here, but expresses his regrets. Both seem hollow to me.

We all should take responsibility for our actions regardless of the consequences of publicly expressing our regret eg being sued. I think the first task is seeing if I can ameliorate the cause for regret and if not, try not to beat myself up too badly about it.

I did get the first reference -- but who's Edith PiaF?

Piaf...a very famous French singer, an icon...Piaf being the nicknmae for a sparrow. One of her hits: 'Non, Je ne regrette rien', recorded in the 60s was also an iconic, defiant song.
