Definitely, I agree. I only taught for 3 years, but I developed strong attachments to both boys and girls --- even without spending much time out of the classroom! Kindred spirits, perhaps. No sexual relationships though.
-
But I bet the illicit aspect of teacher-student sex is a major turn on for some people (depending on your view of the whole forbidden fruit thing).

Kindred spirits

Yupper. And, that is an important aspect of education that is--far too often--overlooked.
.
In fact, you surface that good point. Maybe there should be more social time arranged between students and teachers? Would those times contribute more to the motivation youngsters might have to learn and achieve?
.
What do you think, Lauire?

Yup, teacher-student socialization definitely increases motivation and connection, which are related positively to learning. It's a complex scenario, though -- teaching is draining and difficult enough without socializing with the students! The social aspect would have to be built into the school day, which takes away from the curricular goals.
-
Where I taught in Africa, there was huge amounts of teacher-student socialization because the American population was small. The parents were often friends with teachers, which lead to dinners and even holidays together. It works if the right people are involved -- you'd have to set good boundaries on both yourself and the kids.

When I was a child in grade schools, there was a lot of interaction between the families and the teachers. That was especially so in the rural school where I attended. Most of the students were farm children and their parents took a big interest in the school and the one teacher we had for all 8 grades. May Day was a big event--all day. Weather permiting we were outdoors most of the day playing games ang going for an exploratory walk in the woods across the road to see the flowers that were breaking through after the long winter.
.
In the city where I also attended, there were regular PTA gatherings. My first recollection of PTA was a cake walk in which I won a beautiful white frosted cake covered with coconut shreds.
.
Did you get your higher education for teaching in Canada or in the States?

Edmonton is a blue-collar city with lots of factories and plants. Not very gorgeous, but the river valley and university campus are pretty. Edm has the highest incidence of MS and Crohn's/ulcerative colitis in the world - or it did when I last heard (couple years ago). But, Edm is inexpensive and very friendly!

Well, that certainly raises some red flags. I'm sure there have been studies looking for indrustrial coincidence.
.
My daughter has degrees in education. I'm not so sure she agrees a lot with the popular methods of the day--especially in what we call private schools here in the States.

Should the student's maturity be taken into account, as well? Age is one thing; maturity level another. Some people are 45 and immature as heck, while others are 14-going-on-45.
