» Feature Writer Laurie Pawlik-Kienlen - women don't talk more!

I definitely talk more than my darling hubby, and I used to think it was because women use about 3 times as many words as men do. But, it turns out that data is a "complete fabrication" according to University of Pennsylvania linguist Mark Liberman (in the March 2007 issue of Psychology Today). He states that there hasn't been a reputable study that shows women talking that much more than men. Not only is there no significant gender difference, men actually say a few more words per day than women.
-
Hmm.
-
What's behind these complete fabrications that women are motor mouths? Sexism, says Deborah Cameron, an Oxford University professor. She cites the belief that women should be silent, as "recommended by ancient authorities ranging from Sophocles ot St. Paul."
-
What's the connection between women being silent and the myth that they talk more? Doesn't there seem to be a disconnect there?

I ain't buying it.

I don't think it's a gender thing at all. It's more a personal thing.

Perhaps, but I think I've met more women talkers than men. I think women are more able to express themselves verbally - and more comfortable doing it.

You could be right on that.

Actually, I like to be in around women much more than men. Why would any man want to be around men? happy

I like them both for different reasons. Women amaze me in their ability to multi-task and juggle a gazillion different conversations, behaviors, and thoughts. Men amaze me in their linear thinking skills and rational arguments.

Generally speaking, of course.

Here's something I've noticed about women.
.
Once the relationships goes beyond the levels of polite banter and some intellectual intimacy is beginning to grow, women reveal a depth of understanding that far surpases any relationship I have ever had with any man. Men seem to like to wear baseball caps and talk about sports scores and other things that have to do with winning and losing. I don't think it is off the wall that wisdom is refered to in the feminine.

I do have some wonderful men friends, though, who like to talk about personal stuff just as much as politics or sports or ball caps. In fact, a friend spent the night last night (when you visit our island, you might as well make a night of it!) -- he was my friend before my husband and I married and now he's our friend -- it's great. Anyway, he talks about relationships, beliefs, values, personalities -- so does my hubby.

Men and women have a different type of wisdom, I believe.

What you seem to be forgetting is that are the independent variable in those relationships--a woman.
.
That's what I'm saying. Women make the difference.
.
We'd all be down the tubes without them.

Yes, I see. Not only would we be down the tubes -- we wouldn't exist in the first place! Plus the tubes would be dirty, I bet.
