Books in my home library highly recommended:

'The Schizophrenias: Guidelines for a wholistic approach to clinical practice'

'I Am Not Sick: I Don't Need Help'

'Mental Health First Aid Manual'

The first provides a highly authoritative description of the schizophrenias and ratings for its treatments as well as analysis of all the leading research, the second explains why we need a more pragmatic approach introducing the concept of anasognosia while the third aims to lift our simple awareness to literacy as well as mental health first aid instructions.

10% of those with schizophrenia will suicide compared to 1% of the general population. The average life expectancy is 10 years less due to suicide, illness, assault etc. There is compelling evidence that a significant reduction in relapses occur WITH medication.

"Contrary to the expected downward and deteriorating course for schizophrenia, a significant proportion of people are able to achieve favourable outcomes. Indeed, favourable outcomes (varying from having mild impairment to experiencing full recovery) have been estimated for 21% to 57% of people with schizophrenia."

Schizophrenia Awareness Week for us is held in mid-May 2007. I'm an advocate.

I don't know how it is in the Land of Oz--although the idea of Oz, itself, is a bit free floating; but, I think America as a society has become schizoidal. We have lost our connections with our roots by paying too much attention to the media that dominate our views of reality. Isn't that the definition of schizophrenia? Are we, as a nation, suicidal?
