» Feature Writer Laurie Pawlik-Kienlen - can't get into the discussions

In response to Hot Links? posted by redback:

I've looked at the Mind & Soul discussions (back in the day, when you could have a discussion on the main page), and I could never find an entry spot! Same with the Protestant discussions, I just find them confusing and sorta mean-spirited (that's a strong word, but you get the drift). Sometimes the comments are personal, and I lose interest in it.
-
Of course, if I was part of the personal goings-on, perhaps I'd be eager to get involved! Maybe I should take a risk....

» pink101 - Respectfully To All Three of Us

In response to can't get into the discussions posted by LauriePK:
.
I think, respectfully to all three of us, that the job of programming is tedious at best.
.
If I understand anything about it at all, it depends on what languages (programming) are used to create the software involved. The overall system in use is a product of Microsoft and so it must be taken into consideration. Do the programmers write in C, C++, or do they use some take off on Unix, or whatever? Without going into a lot of explanation, suffice it to say that Rome isn't built in a day.
.
In other words, let's say there is a grand design that Suite101 has in its mind for what things will be like here once they get all their ducks lined up. That is going to take some doing and it will be taking place on one move at a time. Some of those moves might seem to be backwards. They might be smarter to design an entirely new program on the side and to install it all on some magic moment in the future when then complete it with a set of easy instructions on how the participant can easily use it.
.
A process might be in the works. It would be nice if there would be some explanations made from time to time.
.
So, who knows?
.
They are a secretive bunch, I must say.
.

In response to can't get into the discussions posted by LauriePK:

There was far more to suite101 than Mind & Soul or M & S front page. And yes...M & S previously known as Religion & Spirituality etc could get downright nasty in my view. The entry spot I stored on 'Favourites' was a link to ALL recent discussions.

Laurie...some of my reminisces go back to the year 2000 onwards when suite101 sold itself as a leading innovative, forum. Serious, deep thinkers and great topics as well as frothy topics abounded. Trouble is, for us oldies...there's only so many thousand ways to regurgitate the same topic. happy happy

I think I mentioned before I'm in a different time zone...some 18 hours or so ahead eg it's 8:30pm, Monday, 12th. When I log back in, I routinely see discussions by predominantly my northern hemisphere colleagues have travelled too far since my last post or last read to warrant my re-entry.

But one super simple fact is that previously, I needed far less keystrokes to get from one topic (of interest to me) to another. AND successfully find it AND start a new discussion.

I currently only visit your page within M & S. I go to 'Health' which has the same process as M & S so risk RSI by the time I log off. ABC

In response to can't get into the discussions posted by redback:
Pink, I like how you give Suite the benefit of the doubt! Good on ya...yup, sometimes there is more going on behind the scenes and all we can see is the limps forward and back.

Redback, there's nothing new under the sun, is there? Even us "youngies" learn that fairly quickly (although I'm not actually that young. I'm medium).

I can see how the time zone can be a factor in not keeping up with conversations --- I have trouble keeping up even in the same zone!

We definitely should make it easier to start discussions. You're right; too many clicks are required.

I'm glad you visit my page! My page views have surpassed 10,000 a week; sadly, it hasn't translated into big bucks.

In response to can't get into the discussions posted by LauriePK:

I guess this is like a blog happy me telling you where I'm at. Over the years, I've shared much personal stuff which I thought would lead to an increased understanding of Strine and demonstrate my empathy with others.

Sometimes I'd put much effort++ into researching before responding/posting only to find my effort was overlooked in the hurly burly of what the others wanted to say and respond to.

I remember someone reporting they liked to read what I post even if they don't respond so that they know that I know. happy Maybe your 10,000 hits includes a fair number of satisfied passive readers, too. But then, unlike you, I'm not intentionally writing articles even if some of my posts got too lengthy.

I think suite101's current hiccups have reduced discussions so they need a model to reverse that trend. As an ordinary member here with no input, it's hard to focus on solutions. happy

I see your articles are steadily increasing. Keep em coming!

Pink! Re your optimism. happy I had a career where many had a profound (forlorn?) hope in a master plan..even that the "masters" had any plan at all. I tend to agree with you that not all revelations of the truth happen simultaneously or in language we understand. I speak Strine and you say suite101 speaks...Linux or Unix? happy

I don't know what language they use to create their programs here at Suite101.
.
Hopefully, they're up on it enough not to be locked into some language that doesn't allow them to change without having to rewrite the entire program. But, why would they be going through all these transistions unless there were something holding them back?
.
Apparently, their long term goals are more important that how many hits they're getting in the present.

In response to can't get into the discussions posted by pink101:

You reminded me. I've kept an email inadevetently (from suite101) since February that reads in part:

"...As a valued member of Suite101, you are invited to celebrate the site's relaunch and to apply to join Suite101's writer network by publishing expert articles for competitive pay at your own pace...."

No doubt more esteemed members such as yourself got this invite too. It goes on to say:

"...Build an online profile that reaches nearly 4 million monthly readers under the guidance of our professional editorial team."

Laurie's potential audience IS there, according to suite101 'statisticians'. Imagine a turnover of 48 million pa. That's probably small fry in the USA but big bikkies here! ABC

Maybe this is only the effects of my head hurting. The plastic surgeon had 2 stabs at it today...my cheek and my nose.

Hi Laurie. happy Phase 1 is OK. I'm awaiting a biopsy result on cancer type and to what extent I'll get my nose "out of joint" so to speak. The histopathology re the cheek is expected to be OK. Thanx for asking.
