In response to Canada & "OZ" posted by pink101:

I worked for a company in Detroit in the sixties. We had several Canadian workers on the payroll. They lived in Windsor. I could not tell the difference between a Canadian and an American.
.
A few years ago, we came through Canada on our way back to Michigan from a vacation in New England. I noticed some differences. And, when we were in Montreal, I noticed big differences in the people; but, not in the physical aspects of the city. It seemed like any American city. The people spoke French and displayed animosity toward English speaking people. When my wife asked a clerk in a store if she spoke English, she responed, "No more than is absolutely necessary." Woof! But, Montreal is in Quebec.

Just in case you don't know, Detroit and Windsor are part of the same metropolitan complex--a bridge joins the two cities. Detroit is on America's border with Canada. Michiganders are very close to Canadians and consider them to be almost the same. I guess it's a shame we're going to need a passport to go over a bridge to Windsor, Port Huron or St. Ignace.

Michigan's governor is a Canadian woman.

That sure should tell you something about Michigan and Canadian women.

Hey Pink...we'll have to get you learning Strine with an Aussie accent. ABC. You are the ones with a strange "English" accent and stranger or lesser sense of humour. Crikey, we even personalise things more. We put U in your 'humor' and hono(u)r and even have to re-jig our iconic TV show 'Kath & Kim' so you'll have some chance of understanding it for its US-release. happy

I'm not saying! When I stated:
"Our democracy is better than yours where we get more say on matters that matter??!! Ours aint perfect either!"

the ??!! surely showed it was primarily an incredulous question.

The only extra thing going for us if your tough views reflect mainstream USA, is like Canada, we are more relaxed about it all and if any need for healing it's possibly with our Aboriginal brothers and sisters we don't routinely come across...not who we are or what's happening to us as a nation.

BUT the US media's sole interest in doom and gloom may not be a true reflection of the US psyche. You do know our life has far more happy stories than will ever grace the pages of papers you and I read.

OZ has a Westminster system of government, hisorically based on issues flowing methodically to a non-elected, upper class House of Lords. Its attitudes, processes or ethics are steeped in English tradition of laws. Almost all the upper legal formailites of it have been dismantled but the ties are resistant to cutting.

We are in a limbo-land IMO. Until we get rid of the need for a Governor-General...and that means the formal acceptance of whatever form of republic, creation of 'President' of whatever powers, mummy Liz from the House of Windsor still us in her claws.

The royal majority "we" here are supposedly in love with Mrs Windsor, still. The monarchists won the last referendum on the issue. Aaarrgghh!

In the circles I travel in and as far as I can recall, I have always been an Aussie and would never have sought a passport while I was required to gain a British one. But she looks like my late mum, so can't be all bad.

As an aside...this "bunny trail" thing. The way I interpret it, a bunny digs a hole and comes up anywhere and everywhere if given the chance. That's a bunny warren. But a bunny trail is distinguishable by its poop pellets. ABC

Well, if we keep this up, I'll probably develop a much better understanding of people in Australia as well as those who live on paradisical islands off the west coast of the North American continent.
.
That whole thing about kings and queens is a sore spot for Yankee Americans of which I am one. One thing can be said about America and it might be true of Australia and Canada as well. We are not all made by a cookie cutter. We can be easily at odds with each other. Of course, my brand of Americanism is best. happy
.
So, I'm enjoying this conversation with you and Laurie. It's amazing when we give it some serious thought. You're way the hell and gone and Laurie is about a third of the way there from here. Or is it just exactly the other way around?
.
It's 7 above zero farhenheit right now at 8:25 A.M. in Southwestern Michigan. It's Friday the 16th here. We're thirty miles from Lake Michigan and about 130 from Chicago. The days are gradually getting longer. My love and I are off to Florida for ten days beginning Monday. I have a computer available down there so don't give up on me.

I love being part of a monarchy, even if it's in name only. Living in a country that has a queen makes me feel child-like, almost as if I'm living in a fairy tale. And since real life can be painful and difficult, why not enjoy what I can? And I love our anthem, God Save the Queen.

It is amazing, having discussions with people "way the hell and gone"! And it's amazing what we get used to -- what we just take for granted. When I first traveled overseas, I marveled at being able to access my email. Now I grumble if I can't post an article to my website from Turkey or Israel!

By the way, the Tel Aviv airport has this coffee bar with 3 or 4 laptops - they're fast and free! I love that, too.

A magazine in Florida called Ft.Myers mag may publish an article I'm working on. You going near there, pink?

Maybe someday you'll come to my paradisical island off the cost of BC -- wouldn't THAT be a kicker?

I will drive through Ft. Myers on my way to Pt. Charlotte from Boca Raton and once again on my way back to Boca. We leave Boca and take Aligator Alley across to Ft. Myers and then north. It's a long drive. We'll probably have lunch in Ft. Myers. I'll see if I can pick up a copy of the magazine. Lot of wealthy people there. From Pt. Charlotte, we go to Orlando to visit my sister and then back. We'll be staying in Pt. Charlotte for a visit with my brother and his wife.

It's around 32 degrees C here...the tailend of summer allegedly but no cool (or wet) weather expected yet. Apart from the deluge the other day, we remain in our longest drought and we've tended to forget we're the driest inhabitated continent on Earth.

http://www.dfat.gov.au/facts/intro.html

Water..recycled sewerage or desalinated the big topic for the elections. And talking of taking things for granted, Laurie, this wet stuff we've called drinking water...used to clean industry and hose footpaths etc, has been taken for granted for too long, we're only now planning to secure its supply. Well, many here in this laid back country will keep wasting it until the government solves whatever problem they claim exists. The tap still works...don't fix what aint broke. ABC

Pink...I'm not sure what you mean by your pellet: "you're way the hell and gone..." Wasn't that an Audie Murphy movie? happy

Have a great holiday...give your wife a hug from me.

The formula for converting Centigrade to Fahrenheit is F = ((9 / 5) * C) + 32.
.
That's around 90 degrees F. Pretty nice weather.
.
Audie Murphy. Ha ha. I don't know. It's kind of a humorous way of saying something is a far away or long gone. happy
.
I heard some hastle on the radio about an Native American tribe being upset because some ski resort wants to make snow for the ski runs out of that recycled water you're talking about. Their claim is that the run off would desecrate their ancestoral lands. Most Native Americans have great reverence for the earth.

I would have thought history produced much natural "run off" where basically all the water we now drink was then being recycled....albeit (hopefully) with more than 6 degrees of separation between exit and entry. happy It runs or is pumped into the seas, dissolves, evaporates and returns.

Recycled snow for drinking or skiing?? Maybe there has been no additional water added to our planet since before Adam. But certainly, the idea of "..as pure as the driven snow" never matched clinical tests of purity.

An old expression of ours is "Beyond the black stump" to mean living too far away. This expression had it's origins when a genuine black stump was used by surveyers for mapping inland Australia. Anyone wanting to travel beyond the black stump was heading into uncharted lands. But such distances as is existing between the US, Canada and OZ is only relative...to travellers.
