» Feature Writer Laurie Pawlik-Kienlen - Why is politics interesting?

I for the life of me can't summon a shred of interest in politics! Maybe because I'm Canadian and we're fairly tame in that arena (in all arenas actually, not just politically)? Maybe it's my personality? It's funny - about five words into a sentence about democrats or republicans or obama all I'm reading is blah blah blah.

But I LOVED the show West Wing! I miss it - is it still on?

Maybe it's like blue cheese: some of us love it, some hate it. There's just no accounting for taste.

I do think it's cool that Hilary is running - not from a political view as much as a historical perspective. Talk about the "last being the first" (being so publicly humiliated, standing by her man, and now running for President! wow). And from my vague understanding, doesn't she have some good plans?

Hmm...the psychology of politics may be interesting to pursue....

I don't know about the show, West Wing. I never watched it.

Politics is an important aspect of life in America. Not so because the people want it to be, that's for sure. In fact, many people here show little regard for politics.
.
But, America has always been involved with religionists who are constantly trying to take over our culture with their godly ideas about what should and shouldn't be. So, anyone who wants to see progress is hard pressed not to get involved in politics. Other than that, we're back to the dark ages under the authority of the churches.

I see.

So if you're following politics with a bigger worldview than "democrats vs republicans", it may be more meaningful and interesting.

Is Bush a religionist who is trying to take over the culture?

And, is it offensive to ask people what party they follow or who they're supporting? I seem to recall it being a touchy subject, but that was a couple decades ago, with my grandma. Her generation may have kept things like politics, tax, sex, etc. for "private" conversations with people you know well.

Used to be a saying in America, "Two things we don't argue, politics and religion."
.
That's changed. A guy by the name of Pat Robertson, a Christian Dominionist, ran for president and helped to put religion on the front burner. He and another rabble rouser--an Evangelical Christianist--by the name of Jerry Falwell who holds forth on top of a place called Liberty Mountain in the State of Virginia. Both of them are inveterates who have developed expertese in fund raising techniques--all tax free, baby, all tax free. Now, we've got a new one by the name of John Hagee--a pro-zionist in the Lone Star State, who teaches and preaches that God wants us to attack Iran. These guys have got their fingers elbow deep into politics and are still able to maintain their tax exempt status.
