It is so true that we can get very attached to our pets. I remember being crushed as a boy when both of my cats were killed on the highway next to our house - at separate times.

Now, as a dad, I've had to comfort my daughter who still sheds tears at missing our cats we had in Virginia. We had to give them to family member in light of our move. Long story. But at least they're still alive - and we can still get pictures, and talk to the guy caring for them.

I gave away my cat when I moved to Africa to teach for three years. That was five years ago, and I still think about her every day! It does help that we have a cat, but....it also reminds me of my cat all the time. Bittersweet!
