Amrita Sondhi co-created Lululemon athletica with Chip Wilson (Lululemon is famous for yoga wear). She wrote the bestselling Modern Ayurvedic Cookbook & started Movement.

Amrita Sondhi has a passion for fashion, ayurvedic yoga, ayurvedic cooking, and applying yoga lessons to everyday life. Whether she's overseeing the opening of the first retail Lululemon Athletica clothing store in Vancouver BC or writing her own bestseller called The Modern Ayurvedic Cookbook – she does it with it pitta (fire!). She's energetic, strong-willed, and creative.

Good thing, because all three are key to professional and personal success. Sondhi's tasted success - and an occasional setback - with Lululemon Athletica, her ayurvedic cookbook, and her new Movementglobal yoga wear company.

Flowing through change

"People think you're nuts if you go off the beaten path and find your passion," says Sondhi.

Luckily she isn't driven by what people think. She follows her heart and believes in syncronicity. She also applies the tenets of ayurvedic yoga to all aspects of her life: cooking, relationships, and business. From Tayari to Lululemon, she works wholeheartedly.

Sondhi started her first clothing company called Tayari over 20 years ago in her parents' basement. Tayari grew into a successful boutique in the Point Grey area of Vancouver BC; Sondhi served an "artistic, global community" – and the store thrived. Unfortunately thieves also recognized an opportunity and robbed the store, twice. Sondhi decided that "the universe must be staying STOP" and, on the point of burnout, spent some time healing, working freelance, and letting the idea of The Modern Ayurvedic Cookbook simmer in the back of her mind.

First, though, came Lululemon Athletica.

From Tayari to Lululemon

Amrita Sondhi recognized Chip Wilson (founder of Lululemon Athletica) while hiking up Grouse Mountain in Vancouver BC. This is how it happened in a nutshell: she approached him, he shared his vision for Lululemon, she asked if he needed help, and she suggested Lululemon carry yoga wear. Wilson loved the idea – and so do millions of yoga-loving customers! Lululemon is becoming infamous for its yoga wear.

Sondhi left Lululemon just before her 40th birthday. Her birthday present to herself? A hike up Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania – which is right next to Kenya where she was born.

The Modern Ayurvedic Cookbook

Sondhi's ayurvedic cookbook – which I'll be reviewing soon – includes delicious recipes as well as healthy ayurvedic yoga moves. It describes the doshas: vata (air), pitta (fire), and kapha (earth). The recipes in The Modern Ayurvedic Cookbook were inspired by Sondhi's family and friends – and she spent one long hot summer in the kitchen perfecting the amounts and types of ingredients.

It's a bestseller published by Arsenal Pulp Press in Vancouver.

Movement & Pamoja Foundation

Now, Amrita is developing her new line of yoga wear. Her company is called Movementglobal, and symbolize the importance of moving freely and easily not just in ayurvedic yoga, but everyday life as well.

Movementglobal's pants, hoodies, and tops aren't just made from sustainable fabrics, they're yoga wear made of bamboo and soy. Sondhi's vision is that they'll be grown and cultivated by people in Kenyan villages. These Kenyans are affiliated with Pamoja, which is Sondhi's microlending foundation. Pamoja is a charity that helps Kenyans fulfill their dreams much like Sondhi pursues her own passions.

Valuable lessons from Sondhi's experiences with Tayari, Lululemon, and The Modern Ayurvedic Cookbook:

  • Be open to new opportunities, even when you're "just" hiking up Grouse Mountain.
  • Don't be afraid to go off the beaten path to find your passion.
  • Let new ideas percolate in the back of your mind until they – and you – are ready.
  • All relationships have a natural course: stay the course until it's time to let go.
