First, find an exercise plan or fitness program that suits your personality and lifestyle. Then, use these 5 tips for staying active to keep your motivation strong.

Staying active gives you more energy, happier disposition, better sleep, fewer creaky joints, increased lung capacity, and better sex. Exercise plans and fitness programs offer many benefits, but it can be difficult to stay motivated. Whether you’re 2 or 82, you’ll feel best about yourself if you stay active and healthy.

First, find a fitness program or exercise plan that suits your personality and lifestyle. Staying active and feeling fit is highly personal: it can mean training for a marathon or trying fencing for the first time. Fitness programs and exercise plans must meet your needs and challenge you at the same time.

5 Tips For Staying Active

No matter what type of exercise plan or fitness program you’re into, whether it’s walking or water aerobics, here’s five tips for staying active:

1. Choose an exercise buddy wisely. Your exercise buddy should be of similar mind, speed, and fitness level (unless she's a personal trainer, of course). Find a fitness program or exercise plan you both can do. This tip for staying active also builds your social support network.

2. Write your exercise plan in your daytimer. Scheduling a hike, run or fitness class as a “must do” increases the probability that you’ll actually do it. This tip for staying active helps you stay organized.

3. Vary your physical activities. I exercise in the weight room on my work days, run on my days off, go for an hour walk with my hubby on Sundays, and do Yoga on Wednesdays. The more variety there is in a fitness program or exercise plan, the less it feels like work. This tip for staying active keeps you interested.

4. Try something new. Consider joining a softball or soccer team, playing roller hockey or taking Tai Chi. Try a new fitness program or exercise plan. Many community centers offer drop-in volleyball, badminton, or carpet bowling games. Many new fitness programs are appearing, like the Showgirl Workout - and there's always the tried-and-true belly dancing or Tae Bo. This tip for staying active will keep your motivation strong.

5. Join a group. Many 5, 10, 15 kilometre runs and walks offer group training sessions - such as the Vancouver Sun Run Training Clinic. Some excercise stores, such as The Running Room, organize regular runs; your local gym may do the same. This tip for staying active will help you support the local economy, too!
